We are a multi-cat household and we are proud of it! Every one of our furry children is special and we love each of their unique personalities and all their quirks!  But that means that every decision we make feels like it's 10 times bigger because we have to consider how it effects of our kitties, as well as how it might impact the dynamic between them. So it goes without saying that when it comes to travel, we completely understand that figuring out how to accommodate multiple cats is particularly daunting.

First of all, let it be known that we LOVE caring for our kitty-sibling guests! And we do our best to maintain whatever routine and level of co-activity makes them feel the most at home.

One of the first things you can do to make the boarding experience as smooth as possible is to break out a pen and paper (or phone if that's your thing) and make some notes about the relationship between your kitties and their behavior patterns... the more detail the better. This gives your boarding manager (or pet-sitter if you go that route) plenty of context to understand how to care for your cats.

In general, cats who are closely bonded often do very well boarding together, and being together can provide a sense of familiarity in an otherwise new environment. On the other hand, cats who tolerate each other but prefer distance at home may benefit from separate spaces during their stay.

At Chez Mieux we can accommodate two cats in a single condo or in separate adjoining condos depending on what's more comfortable for them.

It is also helpful to think about routines. Cats are creatures of habit, and even small disruptions can throw them off. In the days leading up to your trip, try to keep your kitties routines as consistent as possible: feeding times, playtime, and sleep routines, etc. Cats are sensitive to change and when they can tell something's different in the household it can start to stress them out before you've even broken out the carriers.

When you check your cats in, share those routines with the caregivers. The more information you provide about each cat’s habits, the easier it is for the staff to recreate a sense of normalcy during their stay. This becomes especially important when you have multiple cats with different preferences, like one who eats quickly and another who grazes, or one who is very social and another who takes time to warm up.

Bringing familiar items from home can make a noticeable difference, especially for multi-cat households. A blanket they both sleep on, a favorite toy, or even something that carries your scent can help reduce stress. These familiar smells create continuity between home and the boarding environment. When cats recognize those scents, they tend to settle in more quickly. For bonded cats, shared items can reinforce that sense of togetherness in a new space.

Another important piece is feeding and health management. If your cats eat different foods or have different dietary needs, make sure those details are clearly labeled and communicated. The same goes for medications or supplements. Boarding multiple cats adds a layer of complexity here, but a well-organized plan makes it manageable. Clear instructions help caregivers ensure that each cat gets exactly what they need without confusion.

It is also worth thinking about how each cat handles stress. Some cats are naturally adaptable and curious, while others are more cautious and need time to adjust. This is where choosing the right boarding environment really matters. A calm, cat-only facility with experienced caregivers can recognize subtle behavioral cues and adjust their approach for each individual cat. For example, one cat may want immediate attention and play, while another may prefer a quiet space and minimal interaction at first. Good care is not one size fits all, especially in a multi-cat household.

Finally, try to keep your own energy calm during drop-off and pick-up. Cats are very perceptive and often pick up on their owner’s emotions. A relaxed, confident approach helps signal that everything is okay. When you return, give your cats time to readjust at their own pace. Some may settle right back into their routine, while others might take a day or two to fully relax.

Boarding multiple cats does require a bit more planning, but it also comes with a unique advantage. Your cats bring a piece of home with them in each other. With the right environment and thoughtful preparation, their stay can feel less like a disruption and more like a comfortable, well cared for experience.

And if you're unsure about the best way to handle prepping for and boarding your multi-cat house hold during a trip, we are always more than happy to have a conversation to help you figure out the best solution!
